Plastic Profiles made of Polystyrol – PS

Polystyrene, PS for short, is a thermoplastic and is one of the engineering plastics. Plastic profiles made of polystyrene are characterized by excellent transparency, rigidity, strength and chemical resistance. It is also odorless and easy to sterilize. This makes it popular for the food industry. It should be noted, however, that this plastic is prone to cracking and breaking and is less impact resistant than PE or PP, for example.

In the polymerization of PS, the styrene monomers are bonded together via the vinyl group. In this, the double bond is broken and the monomers are united.

Illustration of various Plastic Profiles

Due to its outstanding properties, polystyrene has a very wide range of applications. Some examples are packaging and tableware for the food industry, molded parts and profiles for the construction industry, disposable syringes for medical technology or cladding and components for the automotive industry.

Binder + Wöhrle processes PS in the field of plastic extrusion and injection molding. B + W has different types in use and produces customized plastic tubes, hoses -profiles, -sheathings, ¬connections and much more in the diameter range of 0.5 – 50 mm.
